Crocheted blankets for Children raising Children

Ladies at an old folks home crocheted squares and we Sr missionary women sewed them together into 14 blankets for older children.  The project is called Children raising Children.  Older siblings raise younger ones when parents die of AIDS or violence.  They turned out really pretty--so colorful like Africa.

Samaritan Purses

Church had so many in attendance today that they had to take all the children out and put them into another room for Sacrament meeting.

The reason it doubled in size was because they received gifts from Samaritan Purses.  It is a humanitarian organization from USA and Canada that assembles shoe-box size boxes full of socks, toys, books and treats for children in Africa.
Word must have spread in advance because we had 95 children and normally only 45 come and we had more adults, youth, etc who had brought their children/siblings.

The Primary President was so worried that the kids would be so hard to manage.  She had them for 3 hours, but they listened so attentively.  Then they gave out the boxes.  She said they got a better gift than just the box.

Pilanesburg trip over Easter break

We stayed at the Gatz Guesthouse for about $100 B & B/night

This is the eating and pool area

We went with Nielsens (PEF missionaries) and Hoffmans (medical)

The guesthouse had all kinds of avocado and lemon trees.

These are little impalas.

This is a DLA (deer like animal)

Another DLA

There were many kinds of birds at the water holes as well as animals.

This picture gives you an idea of what the veld is like--the natural habitat for all the animals we saw

All kinds of beauty in the wilds or veld of Africa

These are rare white rhinos--can't get up close and personal

Hippos in the water which we did not see at Madikwe game reserve

You only know how many are in the water when they come up for air.

I love the giraffes

These are Siamese giraffe--not.

Many zebra

Mama nursing her young

Family of elephants out for a stroll

Dad is dirty and last in line.  They roll in the mud to cool off.

So many wildebeests that we got tired of seeing them.

Lots of turtles along the water's edge

We got to see baboons on this trip

They play on the dam.

Reminded us of a scene from Jungle Book

Last but not least--the wart-hog

Hair Styles in South Africa

This is Anna.  It took 3 hours for her cousins to do her hair with extensions.

Several designs of corn rows.  This is at church preparing for Sacrament meeting. Note that the men have shaved or short hair styles.

Black curly rope like wig

Molly, a YSA with straight hair

Dorothy our RS president with corkscrew like hair

This little girl has extensions

She looks so young for her hair style.  It's heavy.  The girl in pink has short cropped hair.

Kelly with short curly wig

More extensions that cover their head.  Our YSA meeting outside in the sunshine

Ellen our RS VT coordinator--Anna's mother

And yet another style with extensions and the other woman with short style wig.

This YSA has short hair and a pretty face and shaped head.
